The First Run

3

Tonight was a first run of sorts for me. It was the first run back from a temporary hiatus in working out. I haven’t worked out in two whole weeks. The longest break I’ve had in a year and a half. Two weeks ago was a momentus occasion. I went to the gym with my brother and my mom and we all did a workout together. But since then, we’ve had grieving over the loss of both my grandparents, their …

Advice on Running Your First 5k

Comments Off on Advice on Running Your First 5k

Tonight, I’m traveling to Greenville, SC to see a friend and run her first 5k with her tomorrow at the Spinx Great Punkin 5k. I’m completely, beyond honored. This is my first time being a running buddy and paying it forward for all the help I’ve received from my running friends.
Here I am at my very first 5k A Lark in the Park 5K at the Phoenix Zoo, the spring of 2008.

I’ve also decided, it doesn’t matter how many 5Ks …

Join Me in the Race for the Cure

Comments Off on Join Me in the Race for the Cure

Join me this weekend as I participate in the Lowcountry Race for the Cure 5k on Daniel Island, SC. It’s a great race on a flat, fast course and it supports a great cause! I know some people are critical of organizations like Komen, but if you’ve ever been to a Race for the Cure you can see for yourself what it’s like to celebrate the women who’ve survived breast cancer and remember those who lost the brave fight. It’s …

Rockin in Chicago

2

Wow, I took some time off the blog. Mostly it was because in the weeks up to the race I was busy running, resting, and mentally trying not to freak out. 13.1 miles is a big distance for a turtle runner like me. And I’m glad I respect the distance so much because it was a long, hard race for me. And no matter the outcome I was so happy to have finished and to see Chicago. It was a …

ALS Hope Race 2009

1

On Saturday, I participated in my second and probably last ALS Hope Race 5K on the Isle of Palms, SC. It’s a well run event in a pretty location with friendly people, but it’s always way too hot as an evening event to enjoy the challenge of a race. I improved my performance over last year by almost five minutes. Biggest difference is I managed to run the whole thing this year whereas last year I had to walk some. …

13.1

2

It’s been so difficult to write this post. Only thing I can figure is I still don’t believe I finished and the goal is complete. A year ago I thought a 5k was a long distance but a funny thing happens when you start running consistently. You start saying things like 4 miles, 6, miles, 8 miles, 10 miles, 13 miles and somehow it doesn’t sound like some big achievement like  it did twelve months ago. I used to think …

Triathlon Recap

2

Sunday was a day of a dream coming true. A dream I didn’t even know I had until it snuck up on me. I  realized how amazing the moment was when it was happening. On Sunday, at White Lake, NC, I competed in my first triathlon. The Dash for Divas Triathlon 2008 was the 2nd annual women’s only event.
Distances:
250m open water lake swim
7mi bike ride
2mi run
I wasn’t going to compete in a triathlon until 2009. However, when I was planning …

A floppin’ kind of day

2

By all accounts today wasn’t supposed to be a good day for running. I was tired from long work days, anemic, dehydrated, and my stomach hated me since Tuesday when I popped a bunch of motrin to combat the dental electrosurgery. So when 5am rolled around, I did some rolling around myself. I managed to barely eat something before I got ready and left my island for another, more quaint island.
The Floppin’ Flounder 5K was in its 17th year on …

The not so great race

3

Last week, Thursday and Friday flew by faster than lightning because I had a lot of work to catch up on. Saturday arrived and I had to get my mind around the fact that it was a race day. I was still getting used to being back in Charleston and while I was away, the full blast of summer heat arrived. How did that happen? It’s like God suddenly realized he needed to turn up the thermostat while I was …
